Bio

Dennis “Putt” Moore has served as a staff member for the athletics department at Finger Lakes since 1972. Moore is the current chair for the department of physical education and integrated health care. He is responsible for managing the department as a whole on a day-to-day basis. 

Moore is the original founder of the athletics program at the college, which took shape in 1972. He began his career at Finger Lakes as a professor in the physical education department before transitioning into the role of the college’s first ever athletics director in 1991 – a title that he held until 2006. In 2005-06, he was named Region III Athletic Director of the Year.

In addition, Moore coached the men’s basketball program for 23 years, serving as the head and assistant coach for 18 years and 5 years respectively. He is the all-time wins leader in the history of the program at Finger Lakes. Overall, he amassed 251 wins in his Laker coaching career. In that 23-year span, he compiled a pair of championship titles and was twice named Coach of the Year.  

Moore was one of the original founders of the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Additionally, he was a member of the State Board of Directors for the Mid-State Athletic Association as well as for the NJCAA.

In 1993, Moore was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, and in 1998, he was granted the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Recently, in 2011, Finger Lakes basketball court was named Putt Moore Court in honor of the legendary figure. The longtime coach and devoted hard worker at Finger Lakes was the first individual ever to be inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Aside from being an administrator, professor, and coach at Finger Lakes, he has also developed and enhanced physical education programs, courses, and facilities at the college. In 1995, Moore designed and developed an Associate in Science degree program in Physical Education Studies.

Moore is a graduate of Ithaca College, where he earned his bachelor’s in physical education in 1968. He also holds a masters degree in physical education from Syracuse University as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Brockport.

Moore is a consistent and vocal supporter of all alumni activities and initiatives at Finger Lakes. He is instrumentally noted for creating the Distinguished Alumni Awards Program at the college. Moore is an active volunteer. He currently serves as a Board of Directors member for the Canandaigua Federal Credit Union.

Moore currently resides in Canandaigua, NY with his wife Catherine. The couple has a grown son named Grady.
