Lakers Sweep Corning to Close Out Regular Season

SOUTH CORNING, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College Baseball team swept a doubleheader at Corning Community College by the scores of 10-2 and 5-4. Finger Lakes finishes the regular season with a record of 20-21.

Finger Lakes got out to a fast start against the Red Barons. Kane Shaw, Danny D'Eletto, and Max Franzone hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to start the game. Jay Perry hit a single up the middle for a two-out RBI to round out the scoring in the inning and held a 4-0 lead. The Lakers got back on the board in the third inning when Max Franzone led off with a walk. He stole second base bad came home on a single by Cameron Heasley. The Lakers added a run in the fourth and sixth innings to lead 7-0. The Red Barons pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Finger Lakes answered in the seventh. Marc Peterson brought three runs home on a bases clearing double to right centerfield to give the Lakers a 10-2 lead. Relief pitcher Nick Dolbear had a one, two, three inning in the seventh to secure the 10-2 Lakers victory.

Austin Miller got the win on the mound for Finger Lakes. He allowed only three hits over five innings and struck out four. Danny D'Eletto had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in for the Lakers. 

Finger Lakes got out quickly again in Game 2. Kane Shaw led the game off with a single and stole his way to third base. After a couple walks, Cameron Heasley plated two runs with a single. Evan Santiago followed that up with a sacrifice fly for the 3 early 3-0 lead. Corning answered with a run in the first. The Lakers got back on the board in the fourth when Marc Peterson led the inning off with a single. He was bunted to second base and scored on a Kane Shaw single up the middle to make it 4-1 Finger Lakes. The Red Barons scored a run in the fourth and fifth to keep the game close. Evan Santiago scored on a single by Michael LiPani and the Lakers were up 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. Corning was able to get an unearned run off closer Kane Shaw, but Shaw struck out the final batter to record his fifth save of the season as Finger Lakes won 5-4.

To go with his save, Shaw had three hits and three stolen bases in the game. Cam Heasley drove in a pair of runs for the Lakers. Zach Lyman got the win on the mound. He recorded six strikeouts in his six innings of work in earning his first collegiate victory.

The Lakers secured the four seed in the Western Division of Region III. The Lakers will travel to Herkimer County Community College on Saturday to take on the one seed in the East. Games 1 and 2 of the three game series will be in Herkimer on Saturday.
