Finger Lakes Opens Season with Split
ARNOLD, MD – The Finger Lakes Baseball team earned a split in their first time out this spring in Arnold, MD against Anne Arundel Community College. The Lakers defeated the Division II Pioneers 7-4 in Game 1. Anne Arundel took Game 2 by the score of 7-6.
The Lakers open their season with a 1-1 record. They will next travel to Cumberland, MD to face Allegany College of Maryland on Monday. The doubleheader will start at 1pm.
Ryan Landers (1-0) earned the win for the Lakers in Game 1. The sophomore allowed just one run and struck out a career-high eight batters. Cole Tracy recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs in his first collegiate game. Caden Giroux, Jon Warner, and Sam McCumiskey all recorded their first collegiate hit in the game as well.
Max Franzone went 3-3 with a triple and a pair of runs scored in Game 2. Danny Goodbread and Caden Giroux each doubled in the game. Alex Dent started on the mound and go the no-decision. He allowed just one run, which was unearned, over his five innings of work. The lefty struck out four in his first start with the Lakers.
Landers set the tone early for the Lakers. He struck out two batters in the bottom of the first inning. Cole Tracy then led off the second with a single. He would move to second and then steal third. Cam Heasley walked and then Sam McCumiskey would single home Tracy for the 1-0 lead. Heasley and McCumiskey would execute a double-steal and Heasley came home on throwing error by the Anne Arundel catcher. The Lakers would score two more runs in the fourth inning.
Leading 4-1 in the fifth inning, Max Franzone led off with a single. That was followed up by a walk by Giroux and a single by Jon Warner to load the bases. Cole Tracy delivered a single to score a pair of runs. A third would come in on a passed ball for the 7-1 advantage. The Pioneers rallied for a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but Ryan Nadeau forced a flyout to Braxton Wilson in leftfield for the 7-4 victory.
Game 2 started with the Lakers once again getting the early lead. Finger Lakes loaded the bases with an error and a pair of walks. Ryan Juergens grounded out to scored Danny Goodbread and Max Franzone came in on a throwing error by the Pioneers. Anne Arundel answered with a run in the second inning, but the Lakers got back on the board in the fifth inning.
Goodbread led the inning off with a double. Max Franzone brought the run in with a single. He advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Cole Tracy. The Lakers would bring in two more runs in the innings on back-to-back Anne Arundel and the Lakers led 6-1. The Pioneers would put together a late rally to plate three runs in the sixth inning. They then had a two out hit in the seventh inning to plate the tying and game-winning run for the 7-6 walkoff victory over the Lakers.
