Lakers Walkoff to Sweep Cannoneers

CANANDAIGUA -- Isaiah Merced singled home Braxton Wilson in the 8th inning of Game 2 to win the game 5-4 and sweep the Cannoneers from Jefferson Community College. The Lakers won the opening game of the doubleheader 7-3.

The Lakers open Mid-State Athletic Conference play with a pair of wins. Overall on the season, Finger Lakes holds a 5-9 record. Jefferson is now 1-9 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. The Lakers are back in action on Friday as they host the JV team from Utica College.

Sam McCumiskey (2-0) got the win for the Lakers in Game 1. He went six innings, allowed just four hits and struck out five. Jon Warner collected three hits for the Lakers. Mark Davis drove in three runs in the win. The Lakers were able to score four of their runs on four sacrifice flies.

In Game 2, Dalton Murray and Ryan Juergens each had a pair of hits. Caden Giroux hit his first collegiate home run in the game as well. Kevin VanDongen (1-0) got the win on the mound throwing three innings of relief for the Lakers.

Back-to-back singles set the Lakers up to score in the first inning of Game 1. Cole Tracy plated Jon Warner with a sacrifice fly and an early 1-0 lead. Jefferson answered in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Warner started the scoring for Finger Lakes again in the third with another single. A pair of walks loaded the bases and Warner scored on another sacrifice fly, this time by Ryan Juergens. 

Sam McCumiskey kept the Cannoneers in check all afternoon. He only allowed two runners to reach second base in the game. Back-to-back singles by Braxton Wilson and J.T. Angora set up a pair of runs for Finger Lakes in the fourth inning. Finger Lakes then had the first four batters in the fifth reach base safely. Three of them came around to score as the Lakers continued onto the 7-3 victory.

Game 2 once again saw the Lakers score in the opening inning. Max Franzone walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Ryan Juergens singled home Franzone for the early 1-0 lead. Jefferson led off the third inning with a home run and rallied with two outs to score two more runs and held a 3-1 advantage after three innings. Finger Lakes got one back in the fourth. Braxton Wilson singled and moved to second on an error by the Cannoneers. He scored on a Mark Davis single to make it a one-run game, 3-2. 

Caden Giroux tied the game in the fifth as he led off the inning with a line drive home run onto the soccer field to make it 3-3. Finger Lakes took the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Dalton Murray, but Jefferson tied it right back in the seventh to force extra innings. 

After allowing a two-out single, freshman Kevin VanDongen picked off the Cannoneer pinch runner to end the inning and bring Finger Lakes to the plate. Braxton Wilson got hit by the pitch to start the eighth inning for Finger Lakes. He stole second base and advanced to third base on a single by Dalton Murray. With one out, Isaiah Merced dropped a ball into centerfield to score Wilson and give Finger Lakes a 5-4 walkoff victory.
