Baseball Splits with Jamestown
CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Baseball team split a regional doubleheader with Jamestown Community College on Saturday in Canandaigua. The Lakers won the first game 17-0, but the Jayhawks took Game 2 6-3.
The Lakers now stand at 10-10 on the season. They also hold a 3-1 record in Region III play. Jamestown is 2-8 on the year and 1-1 within the region. The two teams will square off again on Sunday. The games will be once again played at Finger Lakes Community College, however Jamestown will be the home team.
Game 1 saw the Lakers put out a season-high 17 runs. Jon Warner, Max Franzone, Braxton Wilson, and Ryan Juergens all had two hits in the opening game. Juergens drove in four runs with a double and his first career home run. Franzone drove in three for the Lakers as did Caden Giroux. Giroux cleared the bases in the third with a three-run triple. On the mound, Sam McCumiskey (3-0) picked up his third win of the season. He went all five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine.
Mark Davis provided the offense for the Lakers in Game 2. He drove in all three runs for Finger Lakes. Davis hit a solo home run, the first of his career, and a two-run double for Finger Lakes. Also with a pair of hits in the game was J.T. Angora. Anthony Pagliaro started for the Lakers on the mound. He allowed only one earned run in six innings of work while striking out five Jayhawks.
The Lakers struck early in Game 1. Warner and Giroux both walked to start the game. Franzone drove them both in with a single and an early 2-0 lead. In the second inning, the first four batters Finger Lakes sent to the plate all reached base and eventually scored in the inning. Finger Lakes would send 10 batters to the plate in the six-run third inning. The big blasts in the frame were Giroux's bases clearing double and Ryan Juergen's three-run home run. The Lakers added five more insurance runs in the fourth on there way to the 17-0 victory.
Jamestown answered right away in Game 2. They scored a run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Following the run scoring single by the Jayhawks, Pagliaro settled and retired the next 12 batters. After a hot first game, the Lakers offense struggled to string hits together in Game 2. Their best chance early on came in the fourth inning when Max Franzone hit a two-out triple. The next batter, Ryan Juergens, hit a line drive into the right centerfield gap. Unfortunately it was flagged down by Jamestown's centerfielder to end the inning. Down 2-0, Finger Lakes got on the board in the 6th inning when Mark Davis led the inning off with a home run to left field. Jamestown countered with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-1 lead. The Lakers threatened in the bottom of the inning. Jon Warner and J.T. Angora both singled. They scored on a double by Mark Davis. The Lakers would bring the tying run to the plate with one out, but they would not be able to score as they would lose to Jamestown 6-3.
