Lakers Drop Two to Erie
CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Baseball team lost a regional doubleheader to Erie Community College on Tuesday by the scores of 5-4 and 9-6.
The Lakers drop to 12-12 on the season and 5-3 in regional play. The Kats are 16-11 and 5-1 in Region III West. These same two teams will faceoff against each other again on Thursday in Buffalo.
Jon Warner had a pair of hits in Game 1 for Finger Lakes. Cole Tracy also added a key two-run double in the game. Cam Heasley and Ryan Juergens also added RBI singles.
Game 2 saw Max Franzone finish a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He singled, doubled, hit a home run, and drove in two runs in the game. Caden Giroux, Cole Tracy, and Mark Davis also doubled for the Lakers. Davis drove in a pair of runs with his double off of the left centerfield wall. Alan Rombkowski struck out three in his two innings of relief work for Finger Lakes.
The Lakers bats were quiet for most of Game 1. The lone highlight for the Lakers in the opening half of the game came defensively when Braxton Wilson made a diving catch into the left field fence. Finger Lakes came alive in the sixth inning. Jon Warner led off with a since and moved to second on a walk by Caden Giroux. Following a fielder's choice, Ryan Juergens placed Warner for the first run. Franzone and pinch runner Isaiah Merced scored the next play when Cole Tracy delivered a two run double for the Lakers. Erie would escape the inning without any damage clinging to a 5-3 lead. Mark Davis led the seventh off with a walk and stole second base. He scored on a one-out single by Cam Heasley. Warner and Giroux hit back to back singles to load the bases with one out and down by one. A pair of stikeouts, however, would strand the bases loaded give Erie the 5-4 victory.
Once again, the Lakers trailed early in Game 2. They were down 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Caden Giroux led the inning off with a double and Max Franzone scored him with a double of his own. With one out, Cole Tracy scored Franzone with a double. J.T. Angora walked. Mark Davis doubled off the top of the left centerfield fence to score Tracy and Angora and make it a 5-4 game. Sam McCumiskey singled and stole second. Davis scored on a Heasley groundout and to tie the game at 5-5. Erie answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Franzone helped the Lakers answer when he hit a solo home run to deep right centerfield, making it 8-6. The Kats added an insurance run and kept the Lakers off the board for the final two innings as they would go on to defeat Finger Lakes 9-6.
