Lakers Fall to Thunderwolves

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Baseball team dropped a Region III West doubleheader to Niagara County Community College on Sunday by the scores of 16-8 and 10-7.

The Lakers are now 12-18 on the season and 5-9 within the region. Niagara holds a 10-0 regional record. Finger Lakes will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Corning to face the Red Barons.

Ryan Juergens had a single, a double, and drove in two runs for the Lakers in Game 1. Also with two hits and two RBIs was Cole Tracy. Caden Giroux added a pair of hits and stole a base for Finger Lakes.

Max Franzone had a triple and a pair of singles in Game 2. Matt Weinberg drove in three runs for the Lakers. He hit a two-run single and a towering solo homerun in his first start of the season. Mark Davis and Jon Warner also added two hits each in the loss.

Finger Lakes trailed 9-0 early, but got back in the game with a seven-run third inning. Braxton Wilson led it off with a single and Max Franzone and Caden Giroux followed that up with hits. Jon Warner walked to force in a run. Ryan Juergens plated Franzone and Giroux with a single. A single by Cole Tracy scored Warner. Danny Goodbread drove in a run when he reached on an error. Tracy scored and Goodbread advanced to third on a failed pickoff by the Thunderwolves pitcher. Goodbread scored on a Mark Davis sacrifice fly to make it 9-7. That would be as close as the Lakers would make it, however. Niagara added insurance runs, scoring in the fourth, fifth, and seventh, on their way to the 16-8 victory.

Game 2 once again saw the Lakers fall behind early. They trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the second. Mark Davis and J.T. Angora both walked with two-outs. Cam Heasley singled to right to score Davis and the throw from the outfielder went over all Thunderwolves and out of play to bring Angora home, making it 3-2. Niagara answered with five in the third, but the Lakers did not go away. Franzone and Warner singled and both scored on a single by Matt Weinberg. Down 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Weinberg helped draw the Lakers closer as he hit his first home run in a Finger Lakes uniform to make it 9-5. In the sixth, Braxton Wilson led off with a single and scored on a triple by Max Franzone. He was plated on a Jon Warner single to make it 9-7. Niagara added an insurance run in the seventh and the Lakers went down in order as the Thunderwolves completed the sweep, 10-7.
