Lakers Split with Corning

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Baseball team split a doubleheader with Corning Community College on Thursday. The Lakers took Game 1 15-1 but fell in the nightcap 12-8.

Finger Lakes now stands at 13-19 on the season. They hold a 5-1 record in the Mid-State Athletic Conference and are 6-10 in regional play. The Red Barons are 7-5 in Region III West games. The Lakers will travel to Syracuse on Saturday to face Onondaga Community College.

Danny Goodbread went perfect 3-3 in Game 1 with a double. Cole Tracy was also perfect, going 2-2. Tracy drove in a pair of runs for the Lakers and hit his second home run of the season. Jon Warner finished with a team-high 3 RBIs. Anthony Pagliaro got his first win of the season on the mound allowing only one run and scattering six hits. Mike Principio added a perfect inning of relief to close out the game.

Mark Davis hit a pair of doubles in Game 2 for Finger Lakes and drove in a pair of runs. Also with two hits were Jon Warner and Danny Goodbread. Goodbread drove in three runs for the Lakers as well. J.T. Angora provided a key single for Finger Lakes that drove in a pair of runs.

Finger Lakes attacked Corning early in the opening game, scoring two in the first. Matt Weinberg drove a single that scored a pair of runs for the early lead. Corning answered with a run in the second, but the Lakers offense continued to score. Danny Goodbread led off with a single. Finger Lakes loaded the bases with one out. Giroux brought home one run and Jon Warner hit a two run single. Cole Tracy backed that up with another single to make it 6-1 after two innings. The Lakers added runs in the third. Big hits in the inning included a double by Goodbread and a solo home run by Tracy that gave the Lakers a 12-1 advantage. Finger Lakes added three in the fourth and closed out the game after five innings with the final score of 15-1.

Corning came right out in Game 2 and took an early lead on Finger Lakes. They plated two in the first and two in the third for the 4-0 advantage. To lead off the bottom of the fourth, Jon Warner singled, as did Cole Tracy. With one out, Matt Weinberg hit a double to deep centerfield that left runners at second and third. Mark Davis drove them both in on a double to make it 4-2. Danny Goodbread followed that with a single to score Davis. The fourth ended with the Lakers trailing by one, 4-3. The Red Barons responded with three in the fifth, but the Lakers had an answer of their own. Max Franzone singled to lead the inning off and moved to third on a Caden Giroux double. Warner reached to load the bases for Tracy, who was hit by the pitch to force in a run. With two outs, Danny Goodbread singled to score two, making the game 7-6. J.T. Angora hit a two-run single of his own to give the Lakers their first lead of the game, 8-7, after five innings of play. Corning quickly answered with a run in the sixth to tie the game. The Red Barons then scored four in the top of the seventh as they would defeat the Lakers 12-8.
