Lakers Sweep Panthers

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Baseball team swept Tompkins Cortland Community College in a Mid-State Athletic Conference and Region III West doubleheader by the scores of 12-8 and 10-5 on Tuesday.

The Lakers are 15-23 on the season. They also hold an 8-14 record within the region. Tompkins Cortland has a 7-14 regional record. The two teams will face off again on Thursday in Dryden, NY to complete the season series.

Sam McCumiskey had three hits in the game, including a pair of doubles. Also with two doubles was sophomore Ryan Juergens. Max Franzone, Jon Warner, and Danny Goodbread also had multi-hit games. Cole Tracy finished with a team-high three RBIs for Finger Lakes. Anthony Pagliaro (2-3) got the win on the mound, striking out four.

Caden Giroux and Jon Warner each had a pair of hits in Game 2. Warner also drove in a pair of runs for the Lakers. Max Franzone delivered a solo home run, his third of the season. Ryan Landers (4-4) struck out a career-high 10 batters in his five innings of work. Cam Lueder pitched a scoreless final two innings to earn his first career save.

Tompkins Cortland took an early 6-2 lead over Finger Lakes going into the bottom of the second. J.T. Angora walked a stole second to lead off the inning. He scored on a double by Sam McCumiskey. McCumiskey scored on a single by Max Franzone. Caden Giroux doubled for the Lakers' third straight hit. Jon Warner walked to load the bases. Cole Tracy singled home Franzone and Giroux to tie the game at 6-6. Warner would steal home to give the Lakers a lead in the inning and Danny Goodbread doubled home Mark Davis to end the inning with Finger Lakes leading 8-6. The Lakers added two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Ryan Juergens and an RBI single by Goodbread making it 10-6. The two teams exchanged runs in the fifth and sixth. Sam McCumiskey pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts to secure the 12-6 Lakers victory.

Once again in Game 2, Tompkins Cortland took an early lead and the Lakers took the lead back in the second. Matt Weinberg singled with one out and scored from first base on a triple by Mark Davis. Davis would later score on a throwing error to make it 2-1 Finger Lakes. The Panthers tied it in the third, but Max Franzone gave the Lakers the lead right back with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the third. After Tompkins Cortland tied it again in the fourth, Finger Lakes secured the game in the bottom of the inning. They would score four runs in the frame, with the big hit being a two-run single by Jon Warner to give Finger Lakes a 7-5 lead. The Lakers added three insurance runs in the sixth on their way to the 10-5 victory and sweep of Tompkins Cortland.
