Baseball Ends Regular Season with Sweep

SOUTH CORNING, NY -- The Finger Lakes Baseball closed out the regular season with a sweep of Corning Community College by the scores of 13-9 and 7-4.

The Lakers finish with a 20-24 record on the season and 12-6 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Finger Lakes was 13-15 in Region III West games, earning them the #4 seed in the west for the Region III Tournament. The Lakers will face the #1 seed from the east, Herkimer College, this Saturday in a best of three series.

Seven of the nine Laker starters recorded two hits in Game 1. Caden Giroux had a double, a triple, and four RBIs. Also with doubles in the game were Jon Warner, Ryan Juergens, and Mark Davis. Max Franzone drove in three runs for the Lakers.

Ryan Juergens continued his hot day with a pair of hits, including a double in Game 2. Matt Weinberg had two hits, including a double and drove in two runs. Cam Heasley went 2-2 at the plate and Marc Peterson had a run scoring double for Finger Lakes.

Finger Lakes got on the board first in Game 1, scoring two in the second inning. Max Franzone drove in Danny Goodbread and Dalton Murray with two outs for the lead. In the third, the Lakers added to the lead with seven runs. Jon Warner led the inning off with a double and scored on a single by Cole Tracy. Mark Davis doubled to score Tracy. With the bases loaded an one out, Braxton Wilson worked a walk to bring a run in and another Franzone single brought in another run. Caden Giroux cleared the bases with a double, giving the Lakers a 9-0 lead. Corning answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-3 after three innings. The Lakers added a run in the fourth. The Red Barons put one on the board in the fifth and rallied for 5 runs in bottom of the sixth. Sam McCumiskey came on to strand the tying run at third base to end the inning. Finger Lakes added three insurance runs in the seventh and McCumiskey pitched a perfect bottom of the inning to secure the 13-9 win.

The Lakers and the Red Barons exchanged runs in the second inning. Finger Lakes scored on a sacrifice fly by Cam Heasley. Corning added a run in the third to take the lead, but the Lakers answered quickly. Mark Davis led the inning off getting hit by the pitch. He moved to second on a passed ball and stole third base. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Weinberg to tie the game at 2-2. Finger Lakes took the lead with five runs in the sixth. Matt Weinberg had a two-run single and Marc Peterson had an RBI double in the inning. The Lakers added two more runs on wild pitches to take the lead. Corning added a run in the sixth and seventh but it was not enough as they Lakers continued to the 7-4 victory and sweep of Corning.
