Baseball Splits Home Opener

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team opened their season on Sunday with a double-header against the SUNY Adirondack Community College Timberwolves. The Lakers won game one 11-0, and lost game two 7-6.

Game One

The Lakers were more than ready for their first game of the season. Their first runs were scored in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Alfredo Hurtado tripled scoring Jorge Oropeza, Tim McClare, and Grant Rodriguez. Hurtado scored the final run of the inning from a grounder to the shortstop by Lukas Haefner.

The Lakers really turned it on in the third inning. They scored six more runs. The first run was a single from McClare that scored Alex Maximiek. Haefner hit a bases loaded double that scored Hurtado, Oropeza, and McClare. To finish off the inning, Drew Bailey hit a homerun deep to left center, that scored Haefner.

Maximiek scored the final run of the game. The Lakers ended the game in five innings, 11-0.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Haefner with a double and four RBI's, Hurtado with a triple and three RBI's, and Bailey with one homerun, and two RBI's. Maxx Countryman pitched the five-inning win. He had four strikeouts and only allowed three hits.

 

Game Two

The Lakers got ahead early again in game two. Zach Harter forced an error to score Bailey and Haefner. This put the Lakers ahead 2-0 at the end of the first inning. The second inning was though toughest part of the day. Adirondack scored all seven of their runs in this inning. They scored on two walks, a hit by pitch, a double a single.

Even though the Lakers gave up seven runs in one inning, they still managed to come back within one run. In the bottom of the second inning, Haefner scored Tyler Curtis on a single, and Bailey homered for the second time that day, scoring Haefner with him. In the bottom of the seventh Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jordan Perry. They were so close, but finished with a loss, 7-6.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Bailey with a homerun and two RBI's, and Harter with two RBI's. Alex Savory came into the game in the second inning, for four innings. He had five strikeouts, while only allowing two hits.

The Lakers will play next at home on Sunday, March 21st. They will play a double-header against Jefferson Community College starting at 12:00pm.
