Bats Break Out as Baseball Sweeps Corning CC.

CORNING, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team rediscovered its winning ways Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from Corning Community College.

FLCC (9-7) prevailed 8-6 in game one before setting a season-high for runs scored during a 13-3 victory over the Red Barons (2-7) in game two.

The Lakers broke out the long ball in the opener, hitting three home runs. Sophomores Devin Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) and Zach Harter (Rochester, NY/Rush Henrietta) each homered, as did freshman Jordan Perry (Pembroke Pines, FL/Saint Thomas Aquinas).

Harter went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Perry was 2-for-2 with three RBI, Kelly was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, freshman Grant Rodriguez (Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and classmate Jorge Oropeza (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in game one.

Leading 5-3 heading into the top of seventh, FLCC tacked on three insurance runs to clinch the victory. Sophomore Maxx Countryman (Fairport, NY/Avon) allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts over five innings to earn the win, while classmate Alex Savory (Sodus, NY/Sodus) pitched the final 2/3 of an inning to record his third save.

In the nightcap, Harter went 2-for-2 with four RBI and a run scored, freshman Tim McClare (Macedon, NY/Gananda) blasted a two-run homer, and freshman Alex Maximiek (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Lakers, who scored five first-inning runs to seize control.

Freshman Jim Marasco (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases, and Kelly, Harter, and Oropeza each added steals as FLCC stole five bases in the win. The Lakers scored in all but one of the innings, while blanking Corning outside of a three-run fourth inning.

Freshman Ryan C. Smith (Fairport, NY/Fairport) picked up the win, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts over four innings, while classmate Sean Peck (Dryden, NY/Dryden) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings of relief to record the save.

FLCC travels to Erie Community College for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
