Countryman's Gem Helps Baseball Split with Jamestown CC

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Sophomore Maxx Countryman (Fairport, NY/Avon) tossed a five-hit shutout as the Finger Lakes Community College baseball team earned a split of Tuesday's doubleheader at Jamestown Community College.

The Lakers (13-13) took game one by a 4-0 score before falling 7-3 in game two vs. the Jayhawks (6-9).

In game one, Countryman struck out three batters and issued only one walk, sophomore Devin Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) hit an RBI single, and freshman Grant Rodriguez (Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta) delivered a two-run double into left field during a three-run third inning to fuel FLCC to victory,

Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Kelly was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and freshman Lucas Sulimowicz (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) went 1-for-3 for FLCC.

In the nightcap, the Lakers collected nine base hits, led by Kelly, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and sophomore Zach Harter (Rochester, NY/Rush Henrietta), who went 2-for-4 with an RBI single.

Freshman Jorge Oropeza (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) belted a solo home run, sophomore Lukas Haefner (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) added an RBI double, and Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a run scored for the Lakers.

Trailing 7-0 in the third inning, freshman Justin Kuebel (Hilton, NY/Hilton) held the Jayhawks' bats at bay, allowing four hits over 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Haefner's RBI double in the top of the fourth got the Lakers on the scoreboard, and Oropeza homered and Harter hit an RBI single in the fifth as FLCC pulled within 7-3, but that was as close as the Lakers would get.

FLCC welcomes Jamestown Community College to campus for a doubleheader Thursday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
