Baseball Clinches No. 2 Seed in West with Sweep of Jamestown

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team swept both games of Tuesday's doubleheader with Jamestown Community College to conclude the regular season with a record of 21-15.

With the sweep, the Lakers clinched the No. 2 seed out of the West Division for the Region 3 postseason tournament. FLCC will host Mohawk Valley Community College in a best-of-three sub-regional, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.

The Lakers won 4-3 in the opener before blanking the Jayhawks (9-18) 4-0 in game two.

Game One

Tied at three heading to the bottom of the seventh, freshman Ryan C. Smith (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Zak Judson (Elmira, NY/Elmira) and scored on sophomore Devin Kelly's (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) single into left field as FLCC walked off for a 4-3 win.

Freshman Alfredo Hurtado (Davie, FL/Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory) staked FLCC to a 1-0 lead on a groundout in the second inning, and Kelly's single to the gap in right center field extended the Laker lead to 2-0 heading to the fourth.

FLCC extended its lead to 3-0 on a groundout from freshman Jorge Oropeza (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), but the Jayhawks scored twice in the sixth and tacked on a run in the seventh to pull even at 3.

That set the stage for FLCC's walk-off win.

Sophomore Quin Ignazsak (Brockport, NY/Brockport) allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks in the complete-game victory to run his record to 4-2.

Game Two

The Lakers used their speed on the bases to strike first in the second inning. As Oropeza was breaking for second base, sophomore Zach Harter (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) broke for home and successfully stole home to put FLCC up 1-0. Freshman Kenny Murphy (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) followed with a single to drive in Oropeza and give FLCC a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Tim McClare (Macedon, NY/Gananda) extended the lead to 3-0 on a third-inning groundout, and pushed the lead to 5-0 on an RBI double in the fifth inning.

That was more than enough offense for freshman Nick Emmick (Springville, NY/Springville Griffith Institute), who allowed three hits with two strikeouts over five shutout innings to earn his first win with the Lakers.

Freshman Tanner Frank (Brighton, NY/Brighton) closed out the Jayhawks with two innings of hitless relief, striking out three to secure the West Division's No. 2 seed for the Lakers.

Murphy swiped two bags while Hurtado, Harter, and Oropeza added stolen bases in the win.
