Lakers Round Out Away Trip in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Finger Lakes Community College finished their road trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and wrapped up their games apart of the Ripken Baseball Experience. The squad experienced ups and downs on the back-half of their trip.

March 20th, the Lakers played their 1st of a doubleheader in a rematch against the Bulldogs of Bergen Community College. After defeating the Bulldogs previously, Bergen looked to avenge the loss. The Lakers thwarted the Bulldogs attempt however, defeating Bergen by a score of 6-3. No one player stood out in an all-around effort on the day. Michael Protz (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) earned the start, pitching 4 innings without allowing an earned run. Peyton Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./ Dunkirk) came in and pitched a solid 2.1 innings to secure the win, allowing 2 hits, while Sean Peck (Dryden, N.Y./ Dryden) picked up the save, his 2nd of the season.

Ryan Smith (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would lead the way for the Lakers, securing a 1 RBI double to get the Lakers on the board. Teammates Devin Kelly (Clifton Springs, N.Y./ Midlakes)Jorge Oropeza III (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) and Alfredo Hurtado (Davie, F.L./ Chaminade Madonna College Prep) would each record 1 RBI. Freshman teammates Andres Rios (Weston, F.L./ Cypress Bay) and DJ Stoianovich (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would each help add to the Lakers lead, and secure the win, with 1 RBI apiece.

 

In the Lakers 2nd of a doubleheader, the Lakers struggled to get runs on the board against the Lakers of Garrett Community College. Justin Marshall (Bath, N.Y./ Haverling)Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./ Hilton) and Tim McClare (Macedon, N.Y./ Gananda) would each score, with Kenny Murphy (Webster, N.Y./ Webster Schroeder) recording a 1 RBI double and Lukas Haefner (Henrietta, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) adding 1 RBI. Ultimately, Garrett College would come out on top in a 11-3 finish.

 

On the last day of the Lakers trip, March 21st, the squad took on the Vikings of Ocean County Community College. The Vikings were able to challenge the Lakers early on and while the team remain competitive throughout the day, they were unable to edge Ocean County, with the Vikings coming out on top, 8-5. Ryan Smith would go an efficent 4 for 5 on the plate, with no RBIs, while teammate Nolan Storch (Elmira, N.Y./ Elmira) would go 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs in the game. Tim McClare, Devin Kelly and Lucas Sulimowicz (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) would each add 1 RBI to round out the scoring for the Lakers on the day.

Despite going 1-2 in two days, the Lakers remain determined to come out with a win over their Conference opponent on March 24th when the Lakers take on the Cannoneers of SUNY Jefferson in a 12 PM/2:30 PM doubleheader.
