Lakers Pick Up Sweep in Home Opener

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College Baseball team competed in their home opener on March, 24th against their Mid-State Athletic Conference opponent in the Cannoneers of SUNY Jefferson. In front of a home crowd, the Lakers picked up a sweep over the Cannoneers, coming away with 6-3 and 4-2 victories.

In his first start of the season, Michael Protz (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would earn the win, facing 17 batters and striking out 6, while holding SUNY Jefferson to 5 hits and 2 runs in game 1. Jake Thomas (Honeoye, N.Y./ Honeoye) would come in for 2 innings of relief, striking out 3, while Sean Peck (Dryden, N.Y./ Dryden) would close the game out in the final inning, good for his 3rd save on the season.

Lukas Haefner (Rochester, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) would help put the Lakers on the scoreboard, knocking in a double and 2 RBIs in the game. Devin Kelly (Clifton Springs, N.Y./ Midlakes) would add a RBI Sac Fly, while teammates Jorge Oropeza III (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) and Justin Marshall (Bath, N.Y./ Haverling) would each at 1 RBI apiece.

In a much closer game 2, Tim McClare (Macedon, N.Y./ Gananda) would earn the start and win on the mound. McClare would go 4 innings, facing 17 batters and striking out 3, while allowing no runs. Jake Conklin (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would pick up his first save of the season, closing out the 4-2 win for the Lakers.

Ryan Smith (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would add a RBI Sac Fly to get the Lakers on the board, while also recording 1 stolen base, followed by 1 RBI apiece from Jorge Oropeza III, Nolan Storch (Elmira, N.Y./ Elmira) and Devin Georgetti (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates-Chili).

The Lakers look to carry the momentum from their 2 wins into their matchup on Saturday, March 26th when the Kats of Erie Community College come to campus for a 1 PM/4 PM doubleheader. The Lakers will go on a road stretch, with doubleheaders against Erie Community College on March 29th and Onondaga Community College on March 31st, before returning back home on April 2nd in a Conference Divisonal matchup with the Lazers of Onondaga Community College at 3 PM and 5:30 PM.
