Lakers Earn Home DH Sweep

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team played host to the Hornets of SUNY Broome Saturday, April 9th. The Lakers faced off against the Hornets in a Mid-State Athletic Conference and Region III doubleheader.

Game 1

The Lakers would put the first run on the board in game 1, when Justin Marshall (Bath, N.Y./ Haverling) hit an RBI single to centerfield to bring home Sophomore Jorge Oropeza III (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena). The Lakers would enter the bottom of the 3rd inning with a 1-0 advantage over the Hornets.

The team continued to add to their lead, exploding for 8 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Ryan Smith (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would hit a 1 RBI single to left field to bring home teammate Devin Kelly (Clifton Springs, N.Y./ Midlakes) and give the Lakers a 2-0 advantage.

Devin Georgetti (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates-Chili) and teammate Jorge Oropeza III would each add 1 RBI apiece to take the 4-0 advantage.

Lukas Haefner (Rochester, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) entered the game with 2 on and hit a 2 RBI single to left centerfield to bring home 2 Lakers runs. The following play Tim McClare (Macedon, N.Y./ Gananda) would hit a 2 RBI homerun to grow the Lakers advantage further. The Lakers would enter the top of the order, as Lakers centerfield Ryan Smith would earn his second at-bat of the inning and make the most of it, hitting a 1 RBI double to left field to close out the 8 run inning.

The Lakers would go 2 scoreless innings before tacking on their 10th and final run of the day when Devin Cannon (Spencerport, N.Y./ Spencerport) scored on a Hornets error, securing a 10-4 victory.

Game 2

The Lakers followed up their game 1, with an even more productive game 2. Lukas Haefner (Rochester, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) would add an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the 1st to give the Lakers the first run of the game.

Haefner would earn his 2nd RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring home teammate Devin Kelly in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Lakers would capitalize on an error by the Hornets to score 3 more in the inning, to give them the 5-0 advantage.

 In the bottom of the 4th inning, with bases loaded, Jorge Oropeza III was hit by a pitch, advancing Devin Kelly home for a score. Lucas Sulimowicz (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) continued the hot hitting for the Lakers, adding a 2 RBI double to right field to bring home two more Lakers.

Justin Marshall added to the Lakers strong performance with a 2 RBI single to right center field. Nolan Phelan (St. Catharines, ON., Canada/ Sir Winston Churchill Secondary) and Andres Rios (Weston, F.L./ Cypress Bay) would each add an RBI single to add to the Lakers lead.

Devin Cannon drew an RBI walk and teammate Nolan Phelan would score on a passed ball to round out the Lakers monster 10 run inning. Eventually, the Lakers would walk away with a 5-inning 15-0 victory over their conference opponent. The win would also earn the Lakers a doubleheader sweep over their opponent.

The Lakers will look to pick up where they left off tomorrow in a doubleheader matchup with the Hornets. The Lakers will travel to play the Hornets at Chenango Valley Highschool in a 1 PM/3:30 PM contest.
