Curtis, Storch Seal Doubleheader Sweep on Sophomore Day

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Sunday, May 1st the Lakers hosted Tompkins Cortland Community College in an NJCAA Region III matchup. The day prior, the Lakers swept the Panthers on their home turf in 17-1 and 16-1 victories. On Sunday, the Lakers would extend their winning streak to 7 after coming away with an 11-1, 5 inning finish, and a 10-3 finish in 7 innings.

Game 1

Michael Protz (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) picked up the start and a win on the mound for the Lakers in 4 innings pitched. Protz would hold the Panthers to 4 hits in that span, only giving up 1 run, and picking up 3 strikeouts in the process. Nicholas Crandall (Olean, N.Y./ Olean) would pitch 1 inning of relief, allowing no runs and striking out 1 batter.

The bats were hot for the Lakers, with Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./ Hilton) hitting a 2 RBI inside the park home run to give the Lakers the momentum in the game. Ryan Smith (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport)  would go 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 RBIs, and teammate Lukas Haefner (Rochester, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) would also go 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs.

Tim McClare (Macedon, N.Y./ Gananda) would add a 1 RBI triple to extend the Lakers' advantage in the game. To cap off a strong game for the Lakers, in the bottom of the 5th inning Nolan Storch (Elmira, N.Y./ Elmira) would put the game away with a home run over the left-field wall, capping off an 11-1, 5 inning mercy rule finish.

Game 2

Josh Ferris (North Chili, N.Y./ Gates Chili) picked up the win in 4 innings pitched, allowing 1 run and striking out 3 batters. Lukas Haefner would follow as the setup reliever, striking out 3 batters in 1 inning, before Peyton Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./ Dunkirk) would close out the final two innings with 3 strikeouts and 1 run allowed.

Tyler Curtis (Greece, N.Y./ Greece Athena) put together one of the most dominating performances of the season, with a season-high 5 RBIs in the game; 2nd-most in a game in program history. Curtis would fall short of hitting for the cycle, adding a hit by pitch, double, triple, and a home run.

Teammate Nolan Storch would continue a stellar day, picking up 2 RBIs. Nick Balcom (Camden, N.Y./ Camden) added 2 RBIs, while fellow Freshman DJ Stoianovich (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) would add 1 RBI to round out the day for the Lakers in the scoring column. The team showcased stellar baserunning with 4 stolen bases on the day from Ryan SmithTim McClareDJ Stoianovich, and Nick Balcom.

The team will await the final regular-season game of the season on the road at Ithaca College for a doubleheader against the Bombers JV.
