Win or Go Home for Baseball Sub Regionals

Auburn, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team battled back and forth with the Cayuga Community College Spartans Saturday, May 14th in the NJCAA Region 3 Sub-Regionals at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y., home to the Spartans.

The Lakers struggled to get any momentum in game 1, falling to the Spartans by a score of 7-3. In game 2, the Lakers found their backs against the wall again, with the Spartans taking a 2-0 lead early in the game. However, the team was determined to extend the series against the Spartans. The Lakers were led by Tanner Frank (Rochester, N.Y./ Brighton) at pitcher, who would hold the Spartans to 2 runs through 6 innings.

The Lakers would battle back, narrowing the lead to 2-1, and then the Lakers would find themselves back in the game thanks to a Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./ Hilton) 1 RBI single to bring home center fielder Ryan Smith (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) to tie the game 2-2, shifting the momentum.

It was all up for the Lakers from that point, student-athlete Tim McClare (Macedon, N.Y./ Gananda) would drive in the go-ahead run to take a 3-2 lead. Tyler Cerame would continue his hot hitting streak, knocking in a 2 RBI single to grow the lead to 5-2. McClare would put the cap on the Lakers scoring, with a monster 2 RBI home run to left center field to take a 7-2 advantage in the game.

The Spartans would attempt a rallly in the 9th inning, scoring three runs to bring the game within striking distance for the opponent. With one on, Lukas Haefner (Rochester, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) would put away the final batter to take home the victory for the Lakers. Now, with the series tied 1-1, The Lakers and Spartans will battle in a win or game matchup at Spartan field Sunday, May 15th at 1 PM, for a chance to compete in the NJCAA Region 3 Final Four in Little Falls, N.Y.
