Momentum Builds for 6-0 Lakers Baseball

NORTH EAST, M.D. - Momentum continues to build for the 2023 Lakers baseball team as they advanced to a perfect 6-0 record on the season after sweeping NJCAA Division II powerhouse Cecil College in 7-3 and 5-3 finales. The Lakers continued to put their offensive firepower on display, paired with strong pitching that has propelled the team to their best start since the 2015 season.

Game 1, March 10th

The Lakers jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in inning one as sophomore Matthew DiSanti (Farmingdale, N.Y./ Farmingdale) snuck in a 1 RBI double in right-center field to bring home teammate Alex Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./ Dunkirk). The Seahawks were quick to get back into the game, taking a 2-1 advantage into the fifth inning.

Sophomore Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./ Hilton) came up with the tying run in the fifth inning, doubling home teammate Matthew Rodriguez (Lackawanna, N.Y./ Lackawanna) bringing the game to a draw. Cerame's double was the first of what turned out to be a 6-run inning; an advantage the Lakers would ride to a 7-3 finish in game one over the Seahawks.

DiSanti would go an efficient 3 for 4 at the plate, driving in two of the Lakers' 6 RBIs on 2 doubles. Earning the start and the win, his first of the season on the mound, was sophomore Devin Georgetti (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates Chili) who would strike out 7 batters over 5 innings.

Game 2, March 10th

The Lakers would start out on the right foot in game two, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the third inning. A pair of Seahawks errors in the first and second inning brought Lucas Sulimowicz (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) and Danny Melendez (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) home.

Freshman teammates Alex Wooton (Palmyra, N.Y./ Palmyra-Macedon) and Ryan Mettler (Middleport, N.Y./ Royalton-Hartland) would each single home a runner in the third, leading to the Lakers' sizeable advantage.

Sophomore Michael Protz (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) earned his second win of the season with 6 strikeouts in 3 innings. Sophomore Jeremy Hernandez (Weston, F.L./ Cypress Bay) would pick up the save, striking out 6 of 13 batters faced, putting the stamp on the season series with the Seahawks.

Up next for the Lakers is a doubleheader matchup at the Ripken Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on March 12th. The Lakers open up the day at 10 AM against Middlesex College before a 3 PM game showdown with the County College of Morris at 3 PM.
