Baseball Moves to 36-11 in Sweep of Corning

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team earned their 35th and 36th wins of the season with a sweep over the Corning Community College Red Barons Saturday afternoon. The Lakers hosted the Red Barons for the team's first matchup of their season series, which will conclude on the road on May 6th.

Game one vs. Corning

The Lakers got back on track after dropping two straight to Genesee in a 10-0 win over the Red Barons. The Lakers drove in 3 runs in the second and capped off the win with a 7-run fourth inning to earn the mercy-rule victory.

The Lakers blasted two home runs in the game, first from Danny Melendez (Victor, N.Y./Victor) as part of the Lakers 3-run second inning. The next home run came off the bat of Alex Wootton (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) who broke open the scoring in the Lakers 7-run fourth inning after blasting a shot over the left field fence.

Melendez finished the an efficent 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, while Wootton capped the day of with his solo shot to left field for 1 RBI. Teammates Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) came up big in the lineup. Cerame would finish 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Goodness finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and 2 RBI.

Sophomore Nick Balcom (Camden, N.Y./Camden) had a monster performance on the mound, throwing a 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts over a complete game (5 innings).

Game two vs. Corning

The Lakers strolled to a sweep over the Red Barons with a 8-3 win in game two. Freshman Alex Wootton led the team with an impressive performance, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and 3 RBI. The Lakers would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, before Wootton smashed a 2 RBI double to grow the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Teammates Nolan Phelan (St. Catharine, ON., Cananda/Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School) and Devin Cannon (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) each made the most of their opportunities after earning the start. Phelan would drive in a run in the game while Cannon finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Lakers are back in action next Tuesday, May 2nd for their final home game of the regular season with the visiting Monroe Community College Tribunes, slated for a 2 PM start.
