Baseball Splits With #12 Ranked Cobras

HUDSON, N.C. - Finger Lakes Community College baseball is now 5-3 following a split of their doubleheader with the host Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute. The Lakers visited the Cobras for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon where the Cobras would take game one before the Lakers stormed back to finish with a win in game two.

The Lakers faced a tough 4-14 loss in game one. Sophomores Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Matthew DiSanti (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) stood out for the Lakers in an otherwise difficult outing. Goodness, showcased his speed and knack for getting on base, scoring twice, and driving in a run while stealing two bases. DiSanti was also a bright spot in the lineup, delivering two hits, including three RBIs, and scoring once. Sophomore Ryan Mettler (Royalton, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland) contributed with a double and a run scored and Justin Angora (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Danny Melendez (Victor, N.Y./Victor) each added a hit. On the mound, Michael Bowler (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) earned the start and struck out three batters. 

In the second game of their doubleheader, the Lakers secured a win against the #12-ranked Cobras, securing an 11-1 victory in 5 innings. The Lakers' hitting was in strong form, as the lineup combined for 10 hits and 8 RBIs.

Sophomore Lucas Granger (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) set the pace early, going 1-for-2 with a double and driving in two runs, also drawing two walks. Teammate Collin Clark (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) delivered a significant blow with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Jeffrey Broadnax (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and Justin Angora also contributed to the scoring, with Broadnax adding an RBI and Angora knocking in two runs. Sophomore Danny Melendez showed his versatility by driving in a run and stealing a base. Classmate Ryan Mettler was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2, scoring twice, and stealing two bases. On the pitching side, freshman ace Ian Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) turned in a stellar performance, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run on five hits over 5 innings. Goodness struck out four batters to help control the game en route to his second win of the season.

Up next for the Lakers is a 9-inning tilt with the Cougars of Frederick Community College on Monday, March 18th at 1 PM. The game will mark their first of three straight as the Lakers will take on the Community College of Allegheny County on Tuesday, March 19th, and Westmoreland County Community College on Wednesday, March 20th.
