Baseball Takes Game One of Conference Doubleheader

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - In a tightly contest game one of their doubleheader with Onondaga Community College, the Lakers came away with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Lazers. Strong pitching, baserunning, and timely hitting all contributed to the victory.

Sophomore Bruno Cergol (Brooklyn, N.Y./Rabun Gap) delivered a standout performance on the mound, pitching a complete game and earning the win. Over evening innings, Cergol allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out eight batters. Offensively, Alex Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) and Ryan Mettler (Royalton, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland) led the charge, with Ahlstrom hitting a double among his two hits and Mettler going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Their efforts set the table for classmate Collin Clark (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) who delivered the game's decisive hit. Clark's two-RBI double brought home teammates Matthew Rodriguez (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) and Alex Ahlstrom, providing the Lakers with the only runs they would need to secure the win. Freshman Jeffrey Broadnax (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) contributed with two hits while Rodriguez and Mettler each picked up a stolen base.

The Lakers were tagged with the loss in game two, the turning point was in the second and third innings where the Lazers built a 5-0 lead. This trend continued into the fourth inning as Onondaga extended their lead to 7-0. Despite the early deficit, the Lakers showed resilience in the seventh inning, rallying to score three runs. Freshman Joey Sanna (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) drove in the first run with a single, later scoring on a wild pitch, while Lucas Granger's (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) RBI single brought home another run. However, the late rally wasn't enough to overcome the early Lazer's lead.

The Lakers move to 7-6 and will hit the road for a rematch with the Lazers this Saturday, March 30th at 12 PM and 2 PM.
