By Logan Weingartner

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team continued their hot streak on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Hornets of SUNY Broome Community College in both games of their doubleheader. The Lakers are now winners of 4 straight and have moved to 28-14 on the season and 14-2 in their conference.

In just his seventh mound appearance of the season, sophomore Bruno Cergol (Brooklyn, N.Y./Rabun Gap) excelled on the mound and was a key contributor to the Lakers' 3-1 victory in game one. The ace pitched a complete game and posted the first no-hitter since the 2023 season when Lakers sophomore and now SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Devin Georgetti threw a complete game no-hitter against Tompkins Cortland Community College. Cergol threw a season-high 107 pitches, striking out 9 batters over 7 innings, along with allowing only 1 run.

Sophomore Matthew DiSanti (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) was a pivotal offensive piece for the Lakers in the first matchup, leading the charge with 2 doubles, a run, and 2 of the team's 3 total RBIs. Sophomores Lucas Granger (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Danny Melendez (Victor, N.Y/Victor) brought in 1 run apiece. The duo also put their speed on display, as Granger stole base twice, and Melendez once.

For game two the Lakers introduced a new face to the mound, sophomore Matthew Rodriguez (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna). Pitching a complete game, Rodriguez held his own over 7 innings of play, striking out 5 batters and allowing only 2 runs.

Sophomore Collin Clark (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) was a vital force for the Lakers in game two, as he led the team in at-bats, appearing at the plate on four separate occasions. Clark would deliver 2 hits, and bring in 1 RBI, along with 2 stolen bases. He was 1 of 4 Lakers who would swipe the bags, with the other 3 being Lucas Granger, Matthew DiSanti, and Jeffrey Broadnax (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton). Matthew DiSanti built on his game 1 successes, driving in 1 run along with 1 RBI.

For the Lakers, the setting will be flipped in their next outing, as they take a trip down to Binghamton, New York, tomorrow to take on SUNY Broome Community College in a crucial doubleheader. The first game will take place at 12:00 PM and the second at 2:00 PM. The Lakers currently sit at 4th in the NJCAA Region III, Division III West standings, and will be looking to put themselves in a prime position for the postseason.
