Finger Lakes Wins at Jefferson 91-73

WATERTOWN, NY -- The Finger Lakes Men's Basketball team defeated Jefferson Community College 91-73 on Saturday in Mid-State Athletic Conference action. The Lakers are now 19-3 on the season and 8-1 in conference play.

Finger Lakes came out firing on Saturday against the Cannoneers. The Lakers opening the game on a 7-0 run. Following a Jefferson basket, Finger Lakes went on a 19-0 run to make the game 26-2 halfway through the first half. Within that run, Tahaij Lewis and Torry Wright each had a three point play. Junior Sims also added a pair of three pointers over the Lakers run. A driving layup by Brandon Bullock capped the run. Jefferson would outscore Finger Lakes by nine points over the rest of the half, but the Lakers carried a 51-36 lead into halftime.

Torry Wright led the Lakers at the break with 14 points. Junior Sims was also in double-digits with 13 points. All eight Lakers who played in the first half recorded at least a field goal for Finger Lakes. Brandon Bullock had six assists in the half to help facilitate a Lakers offense that shot 51% in the half.

The Lakers started the second half much like they did the first. Dylan Verkey made a fast-break three pointer to finish an 11-0 run over the first four minutes of the second half. Jefferson answered with a 6-0 run of their own,  but the Lakers had control of the game. Junior Sims found Verkey on a full-court pass to beat the press to push the margin back to 20 points, 73-53. The Lakers maintained that margin the rest of the half as they went on to defeat Jefferson 91-73.

Torry Wright set a new career-high with 30 points in the game. Wright also led the Lakers in rebounding with 10. Dylan Verkey added 15 points and Junior Sims finished with 13 points. Tahaij Lewis and Brandon Bullock were also in double figures. They scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Bullock also finished with a game-high 10 assists.

The Lakers will have the week off before returning home next Saturday for a key Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup with Corning Community College. The Lakers will face the Red Barons at 3pm on Putt Moore Court.
