Lakers Fall in Final Seconds Against Corning

CANANDAIGUA -- Corning Community College made a put-back layup with 7 seconds left for the lead. Finger Lakes' last second chances fell short as the Lakers lost to the Red Barons 73-72 in Mid-State Athletic Conference action on Saturday. Finger Lakes is now 19-4 on the season and 8-2 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference.

The first half was a game of runs. Finger Lakes opened the game on a 6-0 run. That was answered by a 15-0 run by Corning. Torry Wright made a second-chance layup to end the Red Baron run and start another one for Finger Lakes. They went on a 15-3 run, capped by a Rahiem Robinson layup, to give the Lakers a 21-18 lead. Corning answered and regained the lead towards the end of the half. Torry Wright made a tip-in as the clock expired for Finger Lakes, but Corning still held the 34-30 advantage at halftime.

Torry Wright made the first two baskets of the second half as well as the Lakers tied the game at 34-34. Corning would not relinquish control of the game. Following a Brandon Bullock three pointer, Sayquan Chambers scored five straight points for the Red Barons to built an 11 point lead, 60-49, with just over eight minutes left to play. A minute later and still down by 11, Finger Lakes went on an 11-0 run to tie the game again at 62-62. The Red Barons took the lead back, but a Bullock three pointer tied the game once again. A steal and layup by Bullock gave the Lakers a two point advantage, 69-67 with two minutes left to play. A small 4-0 run gave the Red Barons a 71-69 lead with 30 seconds left to play. Kievonn Banks found Dylan Verkey for a three pointer with 15 seconds remaining to give the Lakers a 72-71 lead. With under 10 seconds left to play, Corning drove baseline and a running shot fell short off of the front rim. Corning was there for the offensive rebounds and put back for the 73-72 lead with 7 seconds left. The Lakers charged up the court. A three point attempt with seconds left was off. The Lakers got the rebound but their last second tap-back missed for the Lakers as they lost to Corning 73-72.

Kievonn Banks led the Lakers with 19 points. He was one of five Lakers to score in double figures. Brandon Bullock and Torry Wright each had 13 points while Junior Sims and Rahiem Robinson both contributed 10 points. Wright finished with a career-high 17 rebounds. Sims and Banks also recorded double-doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds respectively. 

Finger Lakes will play their final regular season home game on Wednesday as they host Cayuga Community College on Sophomore Night. Tipoff with the Spartans is set for 7:30pm.
