Lakers Lose Heart-Breaker to Red Barons

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Men's Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Corning Community College Red Barons on Thursday night. The Lakers lost 72-70.

The Red Barons started off very strong on Thursday. They began the game on a made three-pointer which was quickly followed by a dunk that really got them fired up. With 17:04 left in the half, the Red Barons had a 7-0 lead. Two minutes later, Mason VanderMortal made a layup to put the Laker's first two points on the board. From there, the Lakers slowly started to make their comeback. With just under five minutes left in the half, Hakeem Dobbins made a three-pointer that tied up the game 26-26. The score went back and forth from there. With 31 seconds left, the Red Barons pulled forward again with two made free throws. They were trying to hold onto the ball to keep their small lead going into halftime, but Gethro Germinal made a huge steal to score a fast-break layup to tie up the game, 32-32 at the half.

The Lakers used that momentum coming from the end of the first half, into the second. Dobbins started off the half with the first two points of game putting them back in the lead. The Red Barons wanted their big lead from the beginning of the game again and played hard. Both teams were pressing and doing everything they could to get their leads back. The final minutes of the game were tense and exciting. Both teams were playing strategically with fouls and timeouts to regain possessions. Dante Cannon-Ford made a final effort at the last second to make a three-pointer to win the game, but it was no good and the Red Barons won 72-70.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Cannon-Ford with 17 points, Gedeon Germinal with 13 points, and Hakeem Dobbins with eight points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

The Lakers look to get another win on Saturday, January 18th at home. The Lakers will play Cayuga Community College at 3:00pm.
