Men's Basketball Ends Week With Two Losses

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Men's Basketball team dropped their second game of the week to the Cayuga Community College Spartans on Saturday. The Lakers lost 84-77.

The Lakers quickly gained the lead off of the jump ball to start the game. After a three-pointer from Derek Slywka, the Lakers had a 5-2 lead. The Spartans caught up soon after. They had a pretty large lead with 12 minutes left in the half. The Lakers just kept creeping back up slowly. With five minute left in the half, Mason VanderMortal grabbed the rebound off of a missed shot from the Spartans and ran to make a three-pointer that put the Lakers back in the lead. The Spartans made a layup minutes later and regained the lead they had. After a long couple of minutes, the Spartans had a six point lead but Dante Cannon-Ford made a last attempt three and drilled it. This cut the Spartan's lead in half. The teams went into the locker room with Cayuga up 40-37.

In the second half, both teams made it interesting. The game came down to the last minutes. After halftime the Spartans put up quite a few points expanding their lead. It was a catch-up game for the Lakers. Cannon-Ford made a jump shot with 12:05 left to put the Lakers back in the lead. They couldn't hold onto it for long. The score was tied up again with four minute left. This started the timeouts from both teams. It came down to fouls and free throws, and the Spartans took the game 84-77.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Gethro Germinal with 31 points, Cannon-Ford with 13 points, three rebounds, and seven assists, and Slywka with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Lakers look to improve their conference record at Onondaga Community College on Wednesday, January 22nd. They will play at 7:00pm.
