Cannoneers Last Second Shot Proves Decisive

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Men's Basketball team competed in a Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup with the Cannoneers of SUNY Jefferson Saturday afternoon. In the game, the Lakers felt short in the final seconds, with a final score of 75-74.

The Lakers led 74-73 with :37 seconds on the clock, but the Cannoneers came away with the last basket taking the lead, 75-74. 

For the second game in a row, Devon Payton (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates Chili) led the Lakers offense. Payton added 21 points and 3 assists on the day, while pulling in 7 rebounds and snagging 2 steals. Freshman Austin Franklin (Huntsville, A.L/ Prince George) was key to the Lakers offensive attack, scoring 19 points and dishing out 1 assist. Franklin added 7 rebounds and a block/steal apiece to his total.

Freshman CJ James (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) put together a monster game on the stat sheet, pulling down a game high 21 rebounds on the night. James' rebounding performance ties the 2nd most rebounds in a game in program history. James' performance extended beyond the rebounding category, scoring 7 points and dishing out 3 assists, while blocking 2 shots on defense.

Sophomore Ben Waterman (Savannah, N.Y.) added 8 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block and 4 assists, while Freshman Jaisan Parker (Durham, N.C./ Bull City Prep) scored 7 points and 7 assists, while pulling in 2 rebounds. Coming off the bench, Paxton Creek (Kalagoorie, Australia/ Eastern Goldfields) was a major threat beyond-the-arc, going 4-5, good for 12 points on the afternoon.

The Lakers return to action Wednesday, February 2nd at 7 PM in an away matchup with the Cougars of Genesee Community College.
