Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Conference Matchup

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's basketball team hosted the SUNY Broome Hornets Tuesday night for a Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup on the Putt Moore Court. The Lakers battled back and forth with the Hornets in a contest where both teams were evenly matched. Down 3 with 2 seconds remaining on the clock, the Lakers were given the opportunity to tie the game after a clutch 3-pointer by sophomore Danny Amador (Naples, F.L./ Palmetto Ridge) brought the Lakers within striking distance in the final seconds.

A quick foul by the Lakers and missed free throw by the Hornets put the Lakers in position to tie the game on a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer. However, the team was unable to convert on a well-guarded attempt by the Lakers who would fall to the Hornets 73-70.

Sophomore Jevonte Williams (Rochester, N.Y./ Rush Henrietta) returned to the court in a big way, finishing with 21 points to go along with 4 rebounds, and a team-high 6 assists and 4 steals. Late in the second-half Williams would swipe a steal from the Hornets and put down an emphatic dunk in transition to give the Lakers the momentum towards a late-comeback attempt.

Teammate Alex Hill (Rochester, N.Y./ Fairport) followed in the scoring column with 14 points. Hill sunk 4 3-pointers in the game to go along with 3 rebounds and 4 assists to wrap up his day. Teammate Danny Amador finished the night with 9 points, including a clutch 3-pointer to give the Lakers a chance to force overtime late in the second-half. Amador would also add 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal to his tally to wrap up a strong performance.

Freshman Pacey Hopkins (Avoca, N.Y./ Avoca) finished the day with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while teammate DaVaughn Forte (Alexandria, V.A./ T.C. Williams) added 8 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocks in a solid defensive effort. Coming off the bench, freshman Michael Morgan (Rochester, N.Y./ Edison Tech) finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal, followed by Arona Mane (Bronx, N.Y./ William Grady) with 5 points and 5 rebounds.

The Lakers will be at home for the next matchup against the SUNY Jefferson Cannoneers on Saturday, December 3rd at 2 PM where they will look to find that first win of the season.
