Defense Powers Lakers to First Win of the Season

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's basketball team improved to 1-1 with an 89-77 non-region win over the visiting Mighty Oaks of SUNY ESF. After suffering a season opening loss to the Monroe Community College Tribunes the Lakers were able to get back on track with the win. 

Freshman Jaquan Shears (Rochester, N.Y./Monroe) led the charge for the Lakers, scoring 20 points, hauling in 6 rebounds, and using his playmaking abilities to add 2 assists to his tally. Teammate Jaden Hartsfield (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) erupted for a season-high 24 points. Hartsfield was equally impressive on the defensive end, racking up 8 steals to give his team an edge in the possesion game. 

Kyle Slywka (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) was a key cog to the Lakers' machine, adding in 13 points, 8 rebounds and strong defensive game with 4 steal and 2 blocks. Slywka excelled in the fastbreak and gave his team an edge in the momentum with a two-handed dunk on the transition. Sophomore Andrew Edwards-Ferrell (Rochester, N.Y./ U Prep) excelled in the paint, pulling down 9 rebounds and facilitating the Lakers offense with 7 assists, proving to be a true dual-threat.  

Several players came off the bench to provide a spark including freshman James Reaves Jr. (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) who put up a quick 9 points in 9 minutes of play.  

Up next for the Lakers is a matchup with the Spartans of Cayuga Community College which will end a three-game home stand for the Lakers. The team will tip off against the Spartans at 7 PM this Thursday, November 9th.
