Lakers Dominant Defense Leads to Conference Win

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's basketball team picked up a key conference win on the Putt Moore Court against Corning Community College, defeating the Red Barons, 78-68.

Freshman Jaquan Shears (Rochester, N.Y./Monroe) was a standout for the Lakers, leading the scoring with 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting. In addition, Shears would add 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block to an all-around game. Sophomore Andrew Edwards-Ferrell (Rochester, N.Y./U Prep) had his best game wearing the Lakers blue and green, dominating the boards with 20 rebounds while chipping in 16 points to secure to double-double. Edwards-Ferrell was a ball hawk in the paint, blocking 5 shots to stifle the Red Barons' offense.

Freshman Jaden Hartsfield (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) added 13 points and 5 rebounds, along with 3 assists; serving as a consistent option in the Lakers offense. Teammate Kyle Slywka (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) made his presence felt outside of the scoring column, pulling in 11 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists. Slywka would add 8 points to his tally. Freshman guard Davion Jones (Rochester, N.Y./Monroe) added to the scoring with 8 points while pulling down an impressive 7 rebounds.

Off the bench, freshman center Jace Brown (Red Creek, N.Y./Red Creek) provided a spark with 6 points and 4 rebounds. Brown would block a shot during his limited time on the floor to add to an impressive showing. As a team, the Lakers dominated the glass, outrebounding the Red Barons, 65-36. However, it was the team's defense that would make the difference in the matchup as the Lakers accumulated 11 steals and 9 blocks as a team.

In their next matchup, the Lakers will welcome the St. John Fisher University Cardinals to the Putt Moore Court next Tuesday, November 21st at 7 PM. The Cardinals would pull away in a tight matchup last season, so the Lakers will look to avenge their loss this season and improve to 4-3.
