Men's And Women's Track Competes At SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. - On Saturday March 30th, the Men and Women's track and field team battles the cold, rain, wind and 15 other schools at the SUNY Geneseo Early season opener.  Even though the weather conditions were less than perfect, the Lakers rose above and put together some outstanding performances.

On the Women's side, freshman Melinda Waag from Fredonia, NY, excelled in all four of her events. In the Women's shot put, Waag threw 8.85 meters. This was her first collegiate Shot Put completion, and her throw is just .55 meters away from the national qualifying standard. In the Javelin, she threw 23.38 meters finishing 11th, and once again just 2.2 meters away from the national standard. In the 100 meter hurdles Waag ran 18.10 seconds, which had her finishing 13th in the meet. This time currently has her qualified for the National competition, and on the top of the leader board for the NJCAA.

For the Men's team, there were many notable performances. Dylan McNamara led a very strong 800 meter run squad and ran a season best of 2:08.22. Brenden Sofo ran 11.50 in the 100 meter and 23.81 in the 200 meter run. These times have him .03 seconds off the 100 meter national qualifying standard and .29 seconds off the 200 meter time.

The stand out of the meet was Steven Donnelly, from Geneseo, NY, who had a breakout day in the Discus throw. All three throws in the meet were personal bests for him, however his first throw was his best of the day hitting 38.37 meters. This throw placed him 10th, but more importanlty qualifies him for the national meet, put him second on the NJCAA leaderboard, and shattered the now old FLCC school record by over 1 meter.  

The Lakers Track and field team will be competing next at St. Lawrence College on Saturday April 6th.  This meet begins at 1pm.
