Lakers Place Second In First Home Meet Of The Season

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Cross Country teams participated in their first home meet of their 2020 season on Saturday at the Newark Invitational at the FLCC Newark Campus. This course was the toughest they have ran so far, but the men's team still earned second place.

The men's team ran a 5K and finished in second place out of four complete teams. Sophomore Hunter Brignall kept his winning streak, finishing in first place again. Brignall finished with a time of 18:04.3. Giovanni Ventura was the next finisher for the Lakers. He came in seventh place with a time of 20:13.7. Adam Schreiber finished just behind Ventura in tenth place with a time of 20:54.3.

After three first place finishes, Brignall was pretty proud of his accomplishments so far in the season. "I feel great!" Exclaimed Brignall. "I really worked hard this summer and I'm happy to see all the work starting to pay off."

Even though he finished in first place, Brignall found this Newark campus to be the most difficult course he has been up against so far. "I had a difficult time because I underestimated the difficulty of the course," said Brignall. "I think a combination of going out too fast and paying for it later in the race because of the hills, is where I went wrong."

There was no winning team for the women's race since there were not enough on each team. So, the Lakers competed as individuals. They ran the same 5K as the men. Chyra Patterson was the only women's runner for FLCC this weekend. She finished in seventh place out of nine, with a time of 34:44.9.

The Lakers are looking ahead to their next meet, which will take place at Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday, October 3rd. Brignall says the Lakers are training this week to move back up to first place again.

"The team is looking for the win. It is always on our mind when we enter a race," stated Brignall. "This loss will, and already has, fueled us for the upcoming races."
