Lakers Take First at Mohawk Valley Community College

UTICA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Cross Country teams participated in the Mohawk Valley Community College meet on Saturday. The men's team took first place.

The men's team ran a 5K and finished in first place out of three complete teams. Sophomore Hunter Brignall stayed on top yet again, finishing in first place. Brignall finished with a time of 17:15.5. Giovanni Ventura was the next finisher for the Lakers. He came in fourth place with a time of 18:55.7. Adam Schreiber finished in sixth place with a time of 20:08.8.

There was no winning team for the women's race since there were not enough on each team. So, the Lakers competed as individuals. They ran the same 5K as the men. Kaitlyn Hilkert placed second, with a time of 26:12.6. Chyra Patterson finished in fourth place with a time of 34:25.1.

"Everyone improved on their times from Newark despite a hilly and wet course," said Head Coach Jayden Donahue. "I told the guys going into the race that I expected them to win, no excuses, as we had already bested all three of the scoring teams' multiple times this season."

Coach Donahue's expectations were met, and even though Brignall won, he still found a way to improve.

"I knew Hunter had to focus on a bigger lead on Mohawk's two runners, which he accomplished," said Donahue. "The team trained hard this week and was incredibly focused on two key things: hills and speed, especially later in the race."

The Lakers are looking ahead to their next meet, which will take place at Corning Community College on Saturday, October 10th.
