Late Inning Surges Sinks Softball at MCC

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team traveled to Rochester for a showdown with Monroe Community College, and the Lakers lost both games of the doubleheader to the Tribunes.

FLCC (1-9) lost the opener in six innings by a 12-4 score before falling 11-3 in six innings in game two vs. the Tribunes (3-1).

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Hannah Capacci (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) hit a leadoff single, stole second and third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison).

Seelye held MCC at bay, pitching two no-hit innings until surrendering four runs in the bottom of the third. But the Lakers battled back to tie the game at four in the top of the fourth.

Freshmen Megan Lee (Waverly, NY/Waverly) and Clare Kingsfield (Forestville, NY/Forestville) hit singles, and Lee scored on sophomore Katrina Meyer's (Stanley, NY/Marcus Whitman) fielder's choice groundout. Capacci walked to load the bases, then sophomore pinch hitter Alyn Watts (Naples, NY/Marcus Whitman) tied the game on a two-run single.

But the Tribunes scored twice in the fifth and six times in the sixth to win the opener.

In game two, Capacci was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases, and Seelye and sophomore Karena Ward (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) each drove in a run for FLCC, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score at 2 heading into the top of the fifth before MCC secured the sweep with nine runs over the final two frames.

These two teams will complete their home and home doubleheader series at 2 p.m. Monday at FLCC. The games were originally slated for Friday but were postponed due to inclement weather.
