Softball Earns Split with MCC

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team split a doubleheader Monday afternoon with Monroe Community College at FLCC's turf complex.

FLCC prevailed by a 7-6 score in game one before falling 7-3 in game two.

The Lakers struck first in the opener, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Malori Waag (Cherry Creek, NY/Pine Valley) and freshman Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) each delivered RBI doubles while sophomore Alyn Watts (Naples, NY/Marcus Whitman) added an RBI triple during the five-run first inning.

Sophomore Katie Harmon (Churchville, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) added an RBI groundout and freshman Megan Lee (Waverly, NY/Waverly) scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring outburst.

After MCC scored in the top of the third, the Lakers re-established their five-run cushion when sophomore Hannah Capacci (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) laced an RBI single into center field in the fourth.

The Tribunes scored in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 6-2, but Lee's RBI groundout plated Seelye in the bottom of the frame for a 7-2 lead. MCC then pulled within 7-6 in the sixth inning, but sophomore Lacey Shuttleworth (Scio, NY/Scio) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, including a perfect seventh inning, to earn the save and close out the win.

Capacci went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases, Seelye went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and freshman Kalyska Payne (Savona, NY/Campbell-Savona) allowed three earned runs with three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Tribunes raced out to a 2-0 lead before the Lakers pulled within 2-1 on an unearned run in the top of the third. MCC extended its lead to 3-1 before freshman Caitlynne Marczyk (Livonia, NY/Livonia) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score sophomore Trinity Maestre (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) and close the gap to 3-2 in the top of the fifth. But the Tribunes tacked on four runs in the fifth to pull away.

Marczyk finished with two RBI, and Capacci and freshman Lilian Chrysler (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman) each stole a base in game two for the Lakers.

FLCC hosts Corning Community College in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
