Regan Seelye Twirls Two-Hitter as Softball Splits with Erie CC

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team hosted Erie Community College for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, and the Lakers earned a split against the Kats.

FLCC (3-13) dropped a 13-10 decision in eight innings in game one before rebounding to pick up a 6-2 win over ECC (1-3) in game two.

Sophomore Hannah Capacci (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) was 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored, classmate Ava Breuer (Fillmore, NY/Fillmore) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, sophomore Alyn Watts (Naples, NY/Marcus Whitman) drove in two runs, and sophomore Katie Harmon (Churchville, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener.

The Lakers trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth of the opener until Watts hit an RBI groundout and Breuer scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at two.

ECC pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth, but Harmon and Capacci each hit RBI triples, sophomore Malori Waag (Cherry Creek, NY/Pine Valley) added an RBI single, and Watts plated a run on a groundout as part of a five-run outburst to take a 7-6 lead.

ECC tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Lakers reclaimed the lead when Capacci smashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning as FLCC took a 9-7 lead into the seventh. But the Kats scored twice in the seventh and four times in the eighth to take game one.

The Lakers bounced back with six shutout innings to earn the doubleheader split. Breuer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Harmon was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, and Waag swiped two bases and went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Clare Kingsfield (Forestville, NY/Forestville) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, sophomore Karena Ward (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) hit an RBI single, and freshman Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) tossed six innings of shutout ball to earn the win. Seelye allowed two unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts in the complete game win.

The game was scoreless through two innings until Harmon stole home in the top of the third for a 1-0 lead. Waag extended the lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly, Breuer's RBI single into center field gave FLCC a 3-0 lead, and FLCC tacked on an unearned run for a 4-0 lead in the sixth.

Ward smacked an RBI single and Kingsfield added a sacrifice fly to stake the Lakers to a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. ECC pushed across two runs in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Seelye got a fly out to end the game.

FLCC travels to ECC for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
