Stellar Pitching Not Enough, Softball Falls to Mohawk Valley CC

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team hosted Mohawk Valley Community College for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, and though the Lakers battled, they dropped both games at FLCC's turf complex.

FLCC (7-21) lost by scores of 4-0 and 2-1 vs. the Hawks (11-5).

Game One

The Lakers fell thanks in part to four errors, which contributed to three unearned runs scoring.

Freshman Kalyska Payne (Savona, NY/Campbell-Savona) allowed two runs (zero earned) on six hits over four innings, while sophomore Lacey Shuttleworth (Scio, NY/Scio) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with three strikeouts over the final three innings.

Sophomore Karena Ward (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) doubled and finished 1-for-3, while Payne and sophomores Mia Bresadola (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) and Hannah Capacci (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) added singles in the opener for FLCC.

Mohawk struck for an unearned run in the second, added an unearned run in the fourth and sixth innings, and tacked on a solo home run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Game Two

The Lakers struck first in the top of the second in the nightcap.

Freshman Clare Kingsfield (Forestville, NY/Forestville) hit a leadoff single up the middle, advanced to second on Ward's sacrifice bunt, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout from freshman Megan Lee (Waverly, NY/Waverly).

Like the opener, the Hawks benefitted from two errors that directly led to both of their runs in game two, tying the score on an unearned run in the bottom of the second and pushing across the eventual game-winning run in the fourth.

Kingsfield went 2-for-3 with a run scored, Capacci tripled, and FLCC got singles from freshmen Lilian Chrysler (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman) and Deanna Palmer (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and sophomore Alyn Watts (Naples, NY/Marcus Whitman).

FLCC fell despite out-hitting Mohawk Valley 6-4 in the nightcap.

Payne and Shuttleworth were once again effective on the mound. Payne started and allowed two runs (both unearned) on three hits with one strikeout over four innings, while Shuttleworth tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

The Lakers travel to take on Mohawk Valley CC for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
