Lakers Battle in Season Opener

MONT ALTO, P.A. - The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team battled against Penn State Mont Alto in their season opener on the road. Despite falling to 0-2, the Lakers were impressive in their debut, with a sign of great things to come for the squad.

In the 1st of two, the Lakers fell 8-6 to the Lions. However, the team started the game off on the right foot. In the top of the 1st inning, with two on, Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, N.Y./ Thomas A. Edison) hit a 2 RBI double to bring teammates Peyton Cory (Mexico, N.Y./ Mexico) and Clare Kingsfield (Forestville, N.Y./ Forestville) home to go up 2-0 after 1. The Lakers followed up a strong 1st inning with a two run 2nd inning to go up 5-0 on the Lions. Caitlynne Marczyk (Livonia, N.Y./ Livonia) was able to drive in 1 RBI, while Clare Kingsfield poked in a 2 RBI single. 

The Lakers would have 3 scoreless innings, before finally scoring in the top of the 6th inning, with Clare Kingsfield reaching home on a passed ball. The Lakers comeback attempt would be thwarted by the Lions however, with an 8-6 finish.

In the 2nd game of the doubleheader, the Lakers battled in another close game. The Lakers struggled to get runs on the board early in the game, with the Lakers first runs coming in top of the 4th inning. Hannah DeArmitt would hit a 2 RBI single to break into the scoring column. In top 5th, Hannah Hoffman (Bath, N.Y./ Haverling) would ground out to the second baseman to bring in one run, good for 1 RBI. The Lakers would go another scoreless 2 innings, before hitting the scoring column in the 7th. Deanna Palmer (Auburn, N.Y./ Auburn) would help get the Lakers back in the game with a 1 RBI single, before reaching home herself on an error. However, the Lakers comeback attempt would fall just short, with a decisive 5-6 loss to the Lions.

Despite falling to 0-2, the Lakers proved to be able to score runs and remain competitive in close matchups. The Lakers will look to bounce back today, with a doubleheader against the Ocean County Community College Vikings.
