Lakers Score 35 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep Over Twins

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Lakers softball picked up their first two wins of the season on an overcast day in their home opener against the Columbia-Greene Community College Twins on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers would earn the sweep in their matchup with the Twins to start out the season on the right foot; a perfect 2-0.

Game 1 vs. Columbia-Greene

Sophomore Reagan Seelye (Elmira Height, N.Y./ Thomas A. Edison) helped guide the Lakers to victory in game one, throwing 3 scoreless innings in her first win of the season on the mound. In relief, Madeline Lerro (Friendship, N.Y./ Friendship) would strike out 3 batters in 2 innings; only allowing 1 earned run.

Leading 1-0 after the first inning, the Lakers would explode for 7 runs in the second inning and 5 in the third to catapult the team to victory. The Lakers were led to victory by the bat of Skyllar Weigert (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) who would pick up 3 hits, one of which was a double, while also driving in 5 RBI and scoring 3 runs herself. Freshman Cheyenne Cotton (Nunda, N.Y./ Keshequa) shined in her Laker debut, driving in 3 runs, one of which being a triple, on 2 hits.

Joining the Laker's dominant performance were freshman Aubrey Roberts (Cobleskill, N.Y./ Cobleskill Richmondville) who would go 2-3 with 2 RBI, and Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./ Red Jacket) who went an efficient 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.

The Lakers carried the momentum from their strong win over the Twins into game two.

Game 2 vs. Columbia-Greene

The Lakers followed up one strong performance with another, defeating the Twins 21-1 in another 5-inning mercy rule finish. In game two, freshman Aubrey Roberts would earn the start on the mound and never look back; throwing a complete game and allowing 1 earned run while striking out 7 batters.

The Laker's bats were hot in game 2, with all 9 batters in the lineup earning an RBI. The Lakers were led by strong performances from Reagan Seelye who went 4 for 5 with 4 RBI, Natalie Lecceardone with 2 RBI and a walk, Cheyenne Cotton with 2 RBI, and Mackenzie Johnson-Boser (Dansville, N.Y./ Dansville) with 2 RBI.

The Lakers complete performance guided the team to victory in game two and ultimately the doubleheader sweep to start their season a perfect 2-0. The Lakers are back on their home turf tomorrow, Sunday, March 26th at 1 PM for a doubleheader with the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks.
