Lakers Overcome Late Deficit and Secure Doubleheader Victory Over Erie

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Lakers softball improved to 6-2 on the season after putting together a masterful performance on their home turf on Saturday, April 1st. After a setback in their last game against Niagara County Community College, the Lakers got back on track against the Kats with a doubleheader sweep.

Game one vs. Erie

The Lakers staged a thrilling comeback in the first game of their doubleheader against Erie Community College, ultimately winning 8-7.

Despite trailing 5-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lakers never lost hope, and their persistence paid off. Lakers freshman and week 1 NJCAA Region III Athlete of the Week Cheyenne Cotton (Nunda, N.Y./ Keshequa) put the Lakers on her back with a 2 RBI inside the park home run to bring home teammate Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./ Red Jacket) to tie the game 7 all. It was sophomore Mackenzie Johnson-Boser (Dansville, N.Y./ Dansville) who would score the game-winning run after earning her base on a triple to center field.

Skyllar Weigert (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) led the charge for Finger Lakes, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Cheyenne Cotton also had a standout performance, hitting 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, N.Y./ Thomas A. Edison) pitched all seven innings for the Lakers and earned 5 Ks.

Game two vs. Erie

The Lakers carried their momentum from game one into game two and never looked back all the way through the finish, cruising to a 13-3, five-inning mercy rule finish.

The Lakers offense was firing on all cylinders, with an impressive 18 hits across the game. Natalie Lecceardone had a standout performance, hitting 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs. Cheyenne Cotton also had a big game, hitting 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run, and two RBIs.

Lecceardone and Cotton would hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the third as part of a 7-run inning that changed the momentum of the game there forward.

Aubrey Roberts (Cobleskill, N.Y./ Richmondville Cobleskill) pitched all five innings and allowed just three runs on seven hits while striking out 3 batters over the stretch of the game.

The Lakers return home tomorrow, April 2nd for a visit from the Lazers of Onondaga Community College. The matchup should be eventful as the Lazers enter the contest with a record of 5-7.
