Softball Earns Big Regional Win at Home

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Lakers picked up a big win Sunday afternoon, splitting with Onondaga Community College, ranked 3rd in the recent NJCAA Region III coaches poll. The Lakers took game one over the Lazers, 6-4, before dropping their third game of the season in game two, 13-5.

Game one vs. Onondaga

In a pitchers' duel, both teams held each other scoreless through the first three innings of play. It wasn't until a 2-run fourth inning by the Lakers put the first runs of the game on the board. A 2 RBI triple from freshman Ella Lewis (Lyndonville, N.Y./ Lyndonville) scored teammates Haleigh Weyrauch (Deposit, N.Y./ Deposit Hancock) and Mackenzie Johnson-Boser (Dansville, N.Y./ Dansville).

Sophomore Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, N.Y./ Thomas A. Edison) picked up an RBI single in the following inning to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of the Lakers. The Lazers bats would come alive as the Lakers saw their lead dwindle away with a 4-run sixth inning to give Onondaga their first lead of the game at 4-3.

A 2-run sixth inning and a shutout in the seventh thanks to starting pitcher Reagan Seelye helped finish off the Lazers. Eight different Lakers would find the hit column while six different would score runs in the game.

The Lakers were led by Ella Lewis and Reagan Seelye who respectively went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, and 2-for-4 with 1 RBI. Lewis and Mackenzie Johnson-Boser would each triple in the matchup as well.

On the mound, Seelye pitched a full game, striking out 5 batters over seven innings.

Game two vs. Onondaga

The Lakers struggles came by way of costly errors in game two. The two teams would trade punches early on in what was a back-and-forth game. However, a 5-run third inning and a 4-run fourth inning saw the gap increase between the two teams as the Lazers evened the series to 1-1 with a 13-5 five-inning finish.

Haleigh Weyrauch and Peyton Cory (Mexico, N.Y./ Mexico) highlighted game two with 2 hits each. Cory would drive home 3 runners with a monster inside-the-park home run in the second inning to give the Lakers an early 3-1 advantage. Freshman Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./ Red Jacket) picked up a double on a 1-for-2, 1 RBI performance while also scoring a run.

The Lakers improve to 7-3 on the season and will carry that into their next matchup, the final of a 6-game home stretch, against Monroe Community College on April 4th at 3 PM.
