Lakers Split at Home with Broome on Sophomore Day

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team earned a split of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader with SUNY Broome Community College at the Lakers softball field.

FLCC (12-12, 3-4) earned a 9-1 win in six innings of Game 1 before falling 13-12 in a wild, back-and-forth Game 2 with Broome (8-10, 3-3).

The Lakers recorded 16 hits in the opener, and six different student-athletes had multiple hits, led by freshman Madison Depew (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua), who was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and sophomore Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas A Edison), who went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore Skyllar Weigert (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, freshman Cheyenne Cotton (Nunda, N.Y./Keshequa) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, classmate Haleigh Weyrauch (Deposit, N.Y./Hancock) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and sophomore Peyton Cory (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the Game 1 win.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, FLCC pushed across two runs, including an RBI double from Weyrauch. The Lakers scored twice more in the second, added a run in the third, and scored twice in both the fifth and sixth innings to clinch the mercy rule win.

Weigert hit an RBI triple and Cotton had an RBI single in the fifth, while Cory delivered an RBI single and the Lakers walking off on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.

Seelye earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk on 69 pitches over six effective innings.

In the nightcap, the Lakers scored twice in the first, added a run in the second and third innings, and seized a 7-0 lead thanks to a three-run fourth. But the Hornets stung for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to claim an 8-7 lead.

FLCC responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Broome pulled even in the bottom of the frame. A wild pitch allowed the Lakers to retake the lead, 10-9, and freshman Aubrey Roberts (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill Richmondville) tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh.

After Broome tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, the game went into extra innings. FLCC went back on top 12-11 on Cotton's sacrifice fly out in the top of the eighth, but the Hornets earned the split by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning.

Cotton was 4-for-4 with three run scored and two RBI, Roberts went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, Seelye went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and Cory and Depew each went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.
