Lakers Finish Regular Season with Sweep of Panthers

DRYDEN, N.Y. - The Lakers softball team capped off their regular season with a win, advancing to a 14-16 record on the year with a sweep on the road over the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers.

Game one vs. Tompkins Cortland

The Lakers dominated the first game of their doubleheader against the Panthers, winning 17-2. The Lakers showcased their offensive prowess, accumulating a total of 17 runs on 8 hits.

Leading the charge for the Lakers was shortstop Skyllar Weigert (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua), who had a fantastic performance at the plate. Weigert went 2-for-3, including a home run, and drove in an impressive 3 runs. She also scored a run herself to round out a strong day.

Freshman Cheyenne Cotton (Nunda, N.Y./Keshequa) contributed to the offensive onslaught as well. Cotton recorded a hit and crossed the plate for a run. Teammate Ella Lewis (Lyndonville, N.Y./Lyndonville) had a productive day despite not registering a hit. Lewis drew 2 walks, scored 2 runs, and showed her patience at the plate.

Sophomore pitcher Reagan Seelye (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison), was instrumental in securing the victory. Seelye tossed a solid 5 innings, allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits to secure a game one victory.

Game two vs. Tompkins Cortland

In what turned out to be a close matchup in game two, the Lakers would still emerge victorious to earn the doubleheader sweep over the Panthers.

Leading the charge once again was shortstop Skyllar Weigert, who had an outstanding performance at the plate. Weigert went 2-for-2, reaching base in all of her plate appearances, scoring 2 runs in the process.

Freshman Cheyenne Cotton followed up a strong game one with an RBI double in game two. Teammate Ella Lewis also had a productive game, collecting a hit and drawing a walk.

Sophomore Reagan Seelye followed up a strong hitting and pitching performance in game one, with an even more impressive showing in game two. Seelye went 2-for-2 while drawing 2 walks and scoring 2 runs in the game.

Freshman Haleigh Weyrauch (Deposit, N.Y./Hancock) drove in an impressive 3 runs in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Freshman Aubrey Roberts (Cobleskill, N.Y./Richmondville Cobleskill) made significant contributions with both her arm and bat. Roberts went 2-for-3, including a triple and a home run. She drove in a run and scored 2 runs herself while earning the win on the mound.

The Lakers offensive attack received additional support from Peyton Cory (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), who drove in a run with a hit, and Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./Red Jacket), who drew 2 walks. Madison Depew (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) also contributed with a hit, rounding out the Lakers offensive efforts.

Lakers softball conclude their regular season at 14-16, their best finish since the 2014 season. The team will look to build on a solid core of returners, while welcoming newcomers to the program in 2024.
