Softball Rebounds to Split on the Road

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College softball team took a trip to SUNY Broome Community College Tuesday evening for a NJCAA Region III matchup with the Hornets. The Lakers, who were vying to get back into the win column would drop a close one in game one to the Hornets by a score of 4-5, but they remained determined and rallied in game two to come away with a 10-5 win.

In game one, Cassidy Loveless (Marion, N.Y./Marion) led off for the Lakers, scoring twice and managing a hit and a walk, while teammates Kelsey Payne (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) and Joelle Jay (Macedon, N.Y./Victor) were pivotal in the lineup, Payne added 2 hits, including a double, and driving in a run. Jay added both a double and a triple to an impressive performance, driving in 2 runs and scoring once herself. Sophomore Aubrey Roberts (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) pitched and contributed at the plate. Roberts would record 3 hits and an RBI to round out a productive outing.

The Lakers didn't let a game one loss impact their efforts as they rebounded strongly in game two to secure a 10-5 victory on the road. Strong hitting and solid pitching propelled the team to victory against their regional foe.

Freshman Cassidy Loveless led the offensive surge, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and scoring twice. Loveless performed well on the bases, swiping 2 stolen bases in her strong performance. After pitching in game one, Aubrey Roberts focused her efforts at the plate in game two, achieving a perfect day with 4 hits in 4 at-bats, driving in 2 runs, and stealing a base. Teammate Joelle Jay continued her strong form this season, recording a hit, an RBI, and drawing 2 walks, in addition to a stolen base. Her efforts were complemented by teammate Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./Red Jacket) who added 2 hits, an RBI, and a stolen base to the team's tally. Freshman Madison Anderson (Ashville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) took control from the pitcher's circle, throwing a complete game with 9 strikeouts while allowing 5 runs, only 3 of which were earned.

The Lakers are back on the road for an extended road trip to Hudson Valley Community College this Saturday, April 20th for a 1 PM & 3 PM doubleheader against the Hawks. The Lakers will not return home until May 3rd for their home and season finale against Tompkins Cortland Community College.
