Lakers Improve to 2-2

UTICA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Women's Basketball team picked up a win Saturday afternoon, defeating the Hawks of Mohawk Valley Community College by a score of 50-41.

After dropping their last game to the Saint of North Country CC, the Lakers rebound to improve to 2-2 on the early season. The Lakers squad has proved themselves as a resilient squad "the ladies played great team basketball and everyone contributed on both end of the floor" said Head Coach Mike Broderick, "they have great hearts and great team chemistry".

The Laker relied on their defense in the game, as the second chance opportunities proved vital to the Lakers success, shooting 30.6% on the field and committing 20 turnovers on the night. The Lakers made up for it, grabbing 7 steals, blocking 1 shot and pulling down 11 offensive rebounds on the night.

Freshman guard Hayley Andersen (Penn Yan, N.Y./ Penn Yan) proved the difference maker for the Lakers. Andersen dropped 17 points to lead the Lakers, while also dishing out 2 assists and pulling in 2 steals. Andersen was able to give the Lakers a few second chance opportunities, pulling down 4 offensive rebounds and 1 defensive rebound on the afternoon.

Sophomore guard Izabella Santell (Newark, N.Y./ Newark) came up big for the Lakers, dropping 4 threes, for a total of 16 points on the afternoon. Santell pulled down 7 defensive rebounds and 1 offensive rebound, while also grabbing 3 steals for the Lakers on the defensive end. Freshman Mary Ellen Querrie (Romulus, N.Y./ Romulus) struggled on the shooting end, going 2-18, while still dropping 9 points. However, Querrie made up for it on the defensive end, pulling down 9 defensive rebounds and recording a steal and block apiece. Querrie worked as a playmaker for the Lakers, dishing out 4 assists on the night as well.

Freshman Mackenzie Johnson-Boser (Dansville, N.Y./ Dansville) added 4 points, pulled down 2 offensive rebounds and 5 defensive rebounds. Teammate Abby Nelson (North Rose, N.Y./ North Rose-Wolcott) added 6 points, 2 offensive rebounds, 2 defensive rebounds, 1 steal and 1 assist to the Lakers total.

The Lakers look to carry over their momentum to their next match against the Generals of Herkimer College tomorrow Sunday, November 14th at 12 PM.
