Lakers Put Up Hard Fought Effort in Opener

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's basketball team opened up the regular season on their home court for their annual season opener with the Monroe Community College Tribunes. Despite falling to 0-1 in a 62-28, the Lakers managed to put together some impressive team and individual performances. 

On defense, the Lakers tallied 15 steals as a team and were led by sophomore Izzy Robson (Newark, N.Y./Newark) who finished with 5. The sophomore captain would also chip in 7 points on the night. Freshman teammate Alissa Mazzye (Oneida, N.Y./Stockbridge Valley) matched her teammates intensity with 5 steals of her own to go along with an impressive rebounding performance with 8 on the night. 

Offensively, the Lakers were led by freshman Ciana Galvin (Newark, N.Y./Newark) who consistently found her way to the basket with 9 points, while adding 7 rebounds to her tally. Freshman Lexi Swarthout (Wayne, N.Y./Hammondsport) added a spark off the Lakers bench with 6 points to keep the team animated. Swarthout continued her impressive evening with a solid 4 rebound performance on defense. 

Up next for the Lakers is a road trip to Roberts Wesleyan University in Rochester, N.Y. to take on the Redhawks JV squad. The Lakers tip off their road match is still to be determined. The team will return home next Thursday, November 9th at 5 PM for a matchup with the Cayuga Community College Spartans.
