Women's Soccer Grabs First Win of the Season
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Women's Soccer team grabbed their first win of the season from the Roberts Wesleyan JV Redhawks on Saturday. The Lakers won 7-1.
It was like a whole new team on the field for the Lakers on Saturday. The girls were passing at the right times, and finding their opportunities and taking them. The Lakers were the first to put numbers on the board. 10 minutes into the first half, Alexis Gossage dribbled into the corner and made the perfect cross to Jessica Swalbach who took a one-touch shot. 25 minutes later, the Lakers would put up another goal. Gossage again dribbled the ball up, this time up the middle. She looked ahead and saw Ashlyn Piccarreto open, passed it up, and Piccarreto took a few touches, then drilled it into the back of the net. One minute later, Gossage grabbed one for herself. She was deep in the corner of the field, and took the perfect laser shot to hit the top right corner of the goal. The final goal of the half was from Cassidy Niver who dribbled up the middle of the field, and took the goalie one-on-one, and won. The Lakers walked off the field at the half up 4-0.
Just one minute into the second half the Lakers started the scoring again. Allison Smith scored the first goal of her career. Gossage assisted again, crossing to Smith where she took a two-touch shot. Another minute later, Piccarreto scored her second goal of the game. After a scramble started by Gossage, Piccarreto found the loose ball and kicked it right past the goalie for the sixth goal of the game. The final Laker goal of the night was scored by a solo Danielle Zweigle who went one-on-one with the goalie and won. The Redhawks managed to find the back of the Lakers' net with six minutes left in the game. Lucy Thrash took a free kick that resulted in a Redhawk goal.
Head Coach Doug Tay was very happy with the first win of the season for the Lakers. "Starting off the season a little slow, we challenged the girls to pick up their game and start to play at a little higher level, and every single girl did that today," said Tay. "Today we showed what kind of team we can be when we play to our potential."
Game leaders for the Lakers were Piccarreto with two goals, Gossage with one goal and three assists, and Goalkeeper Sarah Barker with 11 saves.
