Lakers Battle with National Runner-up in Season Opener

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College women's soccer team played host to the 2021 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) runner-up, the SUNY ESF Mighty Oaks.

The Lakers would battle back and forth with the Mighty Oaks in the contest. Abby Neill of the Mighty Oaks would break a 0-0 tie in the 14th minute, scoring unassisted. The Lakers would head into the break, trailing 1-0. Freshman Ella Lewis (Lyndonville, N.Y./ Lyndonville) would quickly bring the game to a tie in the 54th minute, scoring unassisted. SUNY ESF's Abigail Thomas would break the tie, scoring in the 81st minute of the close contest. Lakers Sophomore goalie Grace Hall (Honeoye, N.Y./ Honeoye) would make 12 saves on 14 shots on goal, minimizing the offensive attack of the Mighty Oaks.

Allie Bowe had 4 shots on goal, while teammate Ella Lewis (Lyndonville, N.Y./ Lyndonville) would convert her 1 shot on goal for a score in the contest. Freshman Natalie Lecceardone (Manchester, N.Y./ Red Jacket) would pick up 1 shot on the goal on the pitch as well.

The Lakers will return to play on August 31st on the road in a 4 pm matchup with the Jayhawks of Jamestown Community College, where they will look to avenge their season-opening loss.
